Online Doctoral Programs & Degrees

The doctoral degree is the highest degree offered in academia. There are some slight variations, but primarily there are Ph.D.'s (Doctor of Philosophy), M.D.'s (Medical Doctors), D.A.'s (Doctor of Arts) and J.D.'s (Doctors of Jurisprudence, aks Lawyer). The length of time and requirements for a doctoral degree vary widely, but most require a Bachelor's degree and at least three years of study. Most also require a thesis or dissertation and oral presentation of that thesis to a board of professors.

The Online Doctoral Degree

The online doctoral degree is similar in many respects, although some doctoral degrees, such as medicine, are not available today. Courses are similar to campus-based degree programs - smaller class sizes, more interaction with professors, and a lot of independent study. As you probably know, much of the work in a Doctoral program is independent study.

Accreditation - Caution is Important

Accreditation is very important, especially when considering an advanced degree like a Doctoral. Make sure that the schools you are considering are accredited by a reputable agency. Be careful - some agencies are created by the schools themselves and are not as highly regarded as others. If you are considering paying a significant sum of money for an advanced degree, you owe it to yourself to make sure the degree comes from a highly regarded school with a firm accreditation standing.
