The National Retail Security Survey found that retail companies lost $37.4 billion to theft in 2005. The retail industry, while it can be rewarding in terms of personal contact and access to the latest in fashion, furnishings, electronics, and other merchandise, is perceived by most people as entry-level work. Positions with upward mobility can be hard to come by. However, if you love retail and you’re interested in moving ahead, a master’s degree in loss prevention may be a solution.

Why Take Online Classes?

If you’re already working in retail, then you probably have a varied work schedule. You can take your online classes in loss prevention at your convenience. In addition, by earning your master’s in loss prevention online, you can apply what you learn to your current position. Conversely, your retail experience will be a valuable addition to class discussions and projects.

Types of Online Loss Prevention Classes

While attending your online classes, you will learn how to manage security personnel and how to formulate security policies. You will also learn about legal issues pertaining to keeping employees and merchandise safe. Your education will also include applying what you learn to on-the-job situations and learning up-to-date auditing procedures.

Career Path in Loss Prevention

Unless you already have specific experience in loss prevention, after you earn your master’s you will probably start your career as an associate in the auditing department, while you learn the company’s policies and procedures. From there, you can go on to become a loss prevention trainer, regional loss prevention manager, and even director of security and loss prevention.
